Interview with/Intervista a Jacqueline Carey

Riprendo le redini di questo blog iniziando con un "evento" per me importante: l'intervista a Jacqueline Carey! Per ora la posto in inglese, poi pian piano la traduco. L'intervista è stata fatta con Emanuela Taylor di Diario di Pensieri Persi.

Let me say that I love the Phèdre's trilogy, the growth path that she faces in all the books, and her beautiful and troubled relationship with Joscelin; and I love the depth of the characters and the plot itself, which finds its climax in "The Mask and Darkness" (Kushiel's Avatar). And, yes, I love Melisande, one of the best bad, antagonist characters!

I also love Jacqueline's writing, that teaches me a lot every time I read it. I think... it's perfect!

What did inspire you to write "Kushiel's Dart"? Which kind of challenges did you face writing this book
Part of the inspiration came from research I was doing into angel lore for a non-fiction book, and part of it came from a trip to the south of France. Other aspects are simply a gift of the Muses, like my heroine, Phèdre. Writing such a provocative and controversial character without being exploitational was the biggest challe

Cosa ti ha spinta a scrivere Il dardo e la rosa? Che tipo di problemi hai incontrato nello scrivere questo libro?

Parte dell'ispirazione è venuta da una ricerca che stavo facendo sulle tradizioni degli angeli per un libro non di narrativa, e parte di essa proveniva da un viaggio nel sud della Francia. Altri aspetti sono semplicemente un dono delle Muse, come la mia eroina, Phèdre. Scrivere di un personaggio così provocatorio e controverso, senza eccedere è stata la sfida più grande.

How was Phèdre, a character that feels pleasure in pain, born? Is there anything of yourself into Phèdre?

Where a character like Phèdre comes from is a mystery, even to me! There is enough of me in her to understand her, but only just enough. I wish I had her skill at foreign languages.

Com'è nata Phèdere, un personaggio che prova piacere nel dolore? C'è qualcosa di tuo in lei?

Da dove venga un carattere come Phèdre è un mistero, anche per me! C'è abbastanza di me in lei per capirla, ma solo quel tanto che basta. Mi piacerebbe avere la sua abilità con le lingue straniere.

Why did you choose as Phèdre's marque the rose?

The combination of beauty and thorns seemed appropriate for someone who experiences pleasure in pain.

Perché hai scelto la rosa come tatuaggio?

La combinazione di bellezza e spine sembrava appropriato per qualcuno che sperimenta il piacere nel dolore.

Your books are set in an "alternative" world. How did you come out with the setting and the religion?

The short answer is research, research, research! I’ve always loved history and mythology, so playing with it was a natural extension of my interests.

I tuoi libri sono ambientati in un mondo "alternativo". Come è venuta l'idea dell'ambientazione e della religione?

Terre d'Ange is a deeply religious and tollerant world, which presents a really strong sexual freedom and on the one hand it isn't understandable outside your novels (I'm talking, for example, about the possibility of prostitution of girls and boys, even in their childhood). If the real world were as Terre d'Ange, would you like it?

Children may be raised and trained in pleasure houses in Terre d’Ange, but not to serve as prostitutes until reaching the age of maturity! If that wasn’t clear, perhaps there was some confusion in the translation. That said, I think the world would be a happier place if love and sexuality were considered sacred matters.

Terre d’Ange è un mondo profondamente religioso e tollerante, ma presenta una libertà sessuale molto forte, e per certi versi non comprensibile se non all’interno dei tuoi racconti (mi riferisco, per esempio, all’avvio alla prostituzione di ragazzi e ragazze, già da bambini). Ti piacerebbe se il mondo reale fosse quello descritto in Terre d’Ange?

I bambini possono essere allevati e addestrati in case di piacere in Terre d'Ange, ma non per scrivere come prostitute fino a raggiungere l'età della maturità! Se questo non era chiaro, forse c'è stata una certa confusione nella traduzione. Detto questo, penso che il mondo sarebbe un posto più felice se l'amore e la sessualità sono state considerate questioni sacre.

Creating the "Thirteen Houses of Pleasure", how much inspiration did you take from Geishas' Karyukai and how much did come from other sources or your immagination, instead?

On a subconscious level, I’m sure there was some influence, but I’m only casually familiar with Geisha culture. The names of the Thirteen Houses were inspired by the Victorian Language of Flowers, in which courting lovers would exchange coded messages using the symbolic meaning of various flowers.

La creazione delle Tredici Case del Piacere, quanto ti sei ispirata al Karyukai delle Geishe e quanto, invece, è arrivato da altre fonti o dalla tua immaginazione?

Su un livello subconscio, sono sicura che ci fosse una certa influenza, ma io ho una familiarità con la cultura delle Geishe solo per caso. I nomi delle Tredici Case sono stati ispirati dal linguaggio dei fiori Vittoriani, quando gli amanti durante il corteggiamento potevano scambiarsi messaggi in codice con il significato simbolico dei fiori.

When you decide third volume's title, with the world "Avatar" did you refer to Phèdre? Or even o Joscelin? Or maybe to Mahrkagir?

It is intended to refer to Phèdre. The title was actually my editor’s idea.

Quando hai deciso il titolo del terzo volume, con Avatar ti riferisci a Phèdre? O anche a Joscelin? O forse al mahrkagir?

Sì riferisce a Phèdre. Il titolo era un idea del mio editor.

Last Thursday in Italy was published "The Prince and the Sin", first part of "Kushiel's Justice". What did inspire you to write this novel? Why did you choose Imriel as main character of this new trilogy?

From the moment I conceived of “Kushiel’s Avatar,” I knew I wanted to continue the series with Imriel as my new protagonist. He’s a deeply conflicted character who suffered a great deal at a young age, which creates a lot of dramatic potential.

Giovedì scorso in Italia è uscito Il principe e il peccato, primo volume di Kushiel’s Justice. Cosa ti ha spinto a scrivere questa storia? Perché hai scelto Imriel come personaggio principale di questa nuova trilogia?

Dal momento in cui ho concepito "La maschera e le tenebre", sapevo che volevo continuare la serie con Imriel come il mio nuovo protagonista. Lui è un personaggio estremamente combattuto che ha sofferto molto in giovane età, che crea molto potenziale drammatico.

Which ones are the differences between writing about Imriel and writing about Phèdre?

After writing from Phèdre’s point of view for so long, it was a challenge to switch to a such a different character, writing from the point of view of a very damaged young man. Imriel’s deepest desires are the opposite of Phèdre’s, but unlike her, he fears them.

Quali sono le differenze tra scrivere di Phèdre e scrivere di Imriel?

Out of all the books you've written, which one is your favourite? Which is the one you're most attached to?

That’s a hard question to answer! But I will say “Kushiel’s Dart,” because it was my first love and the one that began my career as an author.

“Kushiel’s Chosen” is my favorite U.S.A. cover. I do like the new Italian ones for the Imriel books. They’re very sexy and sophisticated.

What was your road to publication like? Was it easy, or difficult? After publishing your novels, did you expected the success you had?

It was a difficult road. I spent ten years as a struggling writer before being published. In the end, it was a good thing, as it made me become a better writer. The books have been more successful than I expected. Ten years ago, I would not have imagined doing an interview for an Italian blog!

Come è stata la tua strada verso la pubblicazione? è 'stata facile o difficile? Dopo la pubblicazione dei tuoi romanzi, avevi previsto il successo che hai avuto?

Which ones are the most challenging and the most rewarding aspects of writing?

I actually love the process of writing and being immersed in bringing the story to life. For me, that’s the most rewarding aspect. It’s the time between finishing one project and starting another that I find challenging.

Quali sono gli aspetti più difficili e più gratificanti della scrittura?

Io in realtà amo il processo di scrittura e di essere immersa nel portare in vita la storia. Per me, questo è l'aspetto più gratificante. E 'il tempo tra la fine di un progetto e l'inizio di un altro che trovo impegnativo.

What do you do while you're writing? Have you got any particular creative process?

Nothing exciting, I’m afraid! I don’t have any special creative process. I do a lot of thinking and researching before I begin. Then I spend 3-4 hours a day doing the actual writing until I finish.

Do you plot your stories in advance or do the story and the characters develop as you write? Usually, how long do you write to finish a novel?

I plot my stories in advance. I know there are writers who start without a plan and see what develops, but I can’t work that way. On average, it takes me about a year to write one of the big Kushiel novels.

Tracci prima la trama della storia o la trama e i personaggi si sviluppano mentre scrivi? Di solito, quanto tempo impieghi per finire un romanzo?

Scrivo la trama in anticipo. So che ci sono scrittori che iniziare senza un progetto e vedono come si sviluppa, ma non posso lavorare in questo modo. In media, mi ci vuole circa un anno per scrivere uno dei romanzi grandi di Kushiel.

When you're not writing, what kind of books do you like to read?

I read in any and all genres. I enjoy mainstream literary fiction, mysteries, thrillers, paranormals, fantasy, science fiction, comedies. Historical fiction is a big literary influence for me.

Quando non scrivi, che tipo di libri ti piace leggere?

Ho letto tutti i generi. Mi piacciono romanzi mainstream, i misteri, i thriller, paranormali, fantasy, fantascienza, commedie. La narrativa storica è una grande influenza letteraria per me.

Which ones are your favourite writers?

Mary Renault’s novels set in ancient Greece were the first “adult” books I read, and remain favorites, both for their ability to bring the past to life, and the lyrical writing. The opening line of “Kushiel’s Dart” is written as an homage to “The Persian Boy,” which was the first book of hers I discovered.

Quali sono i tuoi scrittori preferiti?

I romanzi di Mary Renault ambientati nell'antica Grecia erano i primi libri da "adulto" che ho letto, e restano i preferiti, sia per la loro capacità di portare in vita il passato, sia per la scrittura lirica. L'apertura di "Kushiel's Dart" è scritto come un omaggio a "The Persian Boy", che è stato il primo suo libro che ho scoperto.

What do you do every day? What hobbies do you have?

Researching, writing, and keeping up with correspondence from fans takes up most of my time every day. I enjoy cooking to relax, and spending time eating, drinking and talking with friends.

Cosa fai nella vita di tutti i giorni? Quali sono i tuoi hobby?

La ricerca, la scrittura, e tenere il passo con la corrispondenza dei miei fan occupa la maggior parte del mio tempo ogni giorno. Mi diletto a cucinare per rilassarmi e a spendere tempo per mangiare, bere e chiacchierare con gli amici.

Have you got the rose tattoo of Phèdre? Or you have other tattoos?
Although many readers ask this question, I do not have the rose tattoo, or any other tattoos. Someday, maybe!

Have you got any future plan? Have you any other project you're currently working on?

I just finished copyediting “Naamah’s Blessing,” which is the final volume in another D’Angeline trilogy set several generations after the conclusion of Imriel’s story. After that, I have a few different ideas. We will see!

Hai qualche progetto futuro? Hai qualche altro progetto al quale stai attualmente lavorando?
